RFK’s former East River co-op sold for $1.99 million after a bidding war, marking its first sale in over 50 years.

Robert F. Kennedy’s former East River co-op has sold for the first time in more than 50 years, fetching $1.99 million after a bidding war as per an exclusive report by the New York Post. The three-bedroom, three-bath apartment at 870 United Nations Plaza still retains many of the original details from the time it was owned by the late Democratic presidential candidate.Kennedy bought the home in 1965, shortly before the tower was completed in 1966, and used it as his official residence while serving as a New York senator. His wife, Ethel, and their nine children , the couple would eventually have 11, remained at the family farm, Hickory Hill, in McLean, Virginia. The 14th-floor corner apartment first hit the market last fall for $1.79 million, according to Gimme Shelter. A bidding war followed, resulting in a signed contract for $1.99 million. But that deal later fell through, and the apartment returned to the market this spring at the same asking price, listing broker Mary Barbrack of Compass said.Spanning about 2,000 square feet, the apartment remains largely a time capsule of late midcentury-modern design. The home has 48 feet of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the UN garden, while its kitchen appliances, oven and marble bathrooms have remained unchanged since the building was completed in 1966.The apartment opens into a foyer leading to a corner living area. The galley kitchen includes an eating nook, while the main bedroom looks out toward the UN and East River. The tower and its twin at 860 UN Plaza were designed by architects Wallace K. Harrison and Max Abramovitz, who also worked on the United Nations complex and Lincoln Center. The buildings feature bronze-and-glass curtain walls and a soaring, double-height lobby.Residents have access to amenities including a concierge, doorman, gym, lounge and rooftop deck with panoramic views.
