Most of us complain when our hair takes too long to dry.For Renu Dhariyal, washing her hair is something she has to set aside hours for.The Uttarakhand resident has been named the new Guinness World Records holder for the longest hair on a living woman. Her hair measures an incredible 271.5 cm (8 feet 10 inches) – almost as tall as a room.The record was officially verified in Haldwani earlier this year, putting her ahead of the previous title holder from Ukraine, whose hair measured just over 8 feet 5 inches.
It all started nearly 10 years ago
Renu says she made one simple decision back in 2015 – she stopped cutting her hair.She hasn’t looked back since.For her, it wasn’t just about growing long hair. She says she was inspired by the way long hair has traditionally been seen in India – as something that’s closely tied to beauty, culture and identity.Over the years, those extra inches quietly turned into a world record.The photos shared by Guinness tell the story better than words. Her hair spreads across the floor, hangs over the edge of a bed, and is so long that she often keeps it braided just to make everyday life manageable.
No fancy products, just patience
People often assume maintaining hair that long must involve expensive treatments or salon visits.Renu says that’s not the case.She sticks to homemade hair oils and shampoos and avoids chemical-based products as much as possible. She also shares her recipes and hair care tips with followers on her YouTube channel.That doesn’t mean it’s easy.She admits that washing, drying and detangling her hair takes a lot of time. More than anything else, she says, it requires patience.
Everywhere she goes, people notice
It’s hard not to do a double take when someone walks by with hair that’s nearly nine feet long.Renu says strangers often stop to ask questions or compliment her, and her social media posts attract plenty of attention for the same reason.But for her, the Guinness title is about more than just long hair.She hopes it inspires people to stick with whatever goal they’ve set for themselves. Her message is simple: consistency matters, and small efforts over time can lead to something extraordinary.
The internet had jokes – and plenty of admiration
After Guinness World Records shared her achievement on X, the comments poured in.Some were genuinely amazed.Others couldn’t resist making jokes.“Indian villages probably have many more hidden world-record holders,” one user wrote.Another, clearly thinking about their own hair struggles, joked in Hindi, “Here I am dealing with hair loss, and she’s sitting on a whole hair store.”Someone else wondered how much work goes into taking care of it every day, while another simply wrote, “Wow… impressive.”Whether people were joking or cheering her on, one thing was clear – Renu’s record got everyone talking.
