A new $1 coin featuring US president Donald Trump’s likeness will go on sale in the US on Wednesday. The special issue is being released as part of celebrations marking the country’s 250th anniversary.The coin, produced by the US Mint, carries Trump’s portrait on the front, or ‘heads’, while the reverse features the Great Seal of the United States, making up the ‘tails’ side. The coin has a gold finish and bears the inscription ‘LIBERTY; above Trump’s image, with “1776 (tilde) 2026” below it, AP reported.The reverse shows a bald eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, along with the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, Latin for “out of many, one”.The design was approved by the US Commission of Fine Arts earlier this year. The commission’s members were appointed by the US president.Trump had previously described the proposal to put his image on a coin as “very unusual”, but said he was “honoured by it”.The US mint website also states, “250,000 President Donald J. Trump $1 Coins were struck on July 4 with a special “July 4th” privy mark. These coins have been randomly included in the bags and rolls that can be purchased from the Mint’s online catalog.The move comes despite a federal law that generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on US currency. However, the Trump administration has said the president can appear on a commemorative coin under a 2020 law that permits new designs to mark the country’s 250th anniversary.The US Mint wrote on its website, that the coins were being struck to “honour 250 years of great American heritage”.Treasury secretary Scott Bessent had announced in July that the US Mint would produce $1 coins featuring Trump’s likeness for the 250th anniversary. The final design was revised from an earlier version unveiled in October, which showed Trump with a raised clenched fist alongside the words “fight, fight, fight”, a reference to the 2024 assassination attempt against him.The coins are being sold in rolls of 25 for $61 and bags of 100 for $154.50. Some special coins marked “July 4th”, struck on July 4, will be randomly included in the sale.Households are initially limited to two orders, with the restriction set to be lifted at 2 pm Eastern time on Thursday.
