An old pair of mismatched socks lying at the bottom of the drawers can seem destined for the trash. Yet the socks may have a number of uses in the house apart from staying in your footwear. There is one particular hack that allows you to use an old sock as a reusable mop cover to catch dust, hair, lint and debris. It takes almost no effort and costs nothing if you already have an old sock, and it’s useful if you need to clean quickly between regular mopping procedures.
Pick the right old sock
The first step is to choose an old, clean sock which you do not plan to wear anymore. Socks made of thick cotton or terry fabric usually work well because the textured surface can collect dust and hair. Do not use socks with big holes or extremely loose fabric which may not fit on the mop head well. If possible, try to choose an old, large sock which can comfortably fit over the mop head.
Clean it beforehand
You should clean the chosen sock before using it as a mop cover. This way you will get rid of sweat, detergent residues and dust which may be collected in it. The fabric collects loose hair and dust rather than pushing it further. This can also be used to touch up your floors between wet mopping days. Use slow movements to improve the surface coverage.
Dampen it to capture dust
If there is some dust on the floor, you can use this sock hack for damp cleaning. It should only be slightly dampened and not soaking wet. It is important to consult the manufacturer of the flooring material for wooden, laminate, and other sensitive floors.
Dust the corners and furniture
The advantage of this hack is the flexibility of this cover. The sock cover can easily clean places difficult to access with usual mop heads. For instance, use gentle movements around the skirting board, beneath beds, and beside cupboards to collect dust. Since the sock is soft, it can also be used for delicate surfaces, but with caution.
