Sara Tendulkar has found a rather unexpected way to wear a saree – and it works. For her latest Vogue cover shoot, Sara skipped the usual blouse and paired a soft pastel green Banarasi saree with an ivory corset. The result was traditional at first glance, but with a very modern edge. The blouse was a strapless ivory corset made from satin silk and organza silk. With its sweetheart neckline and fitted shape, it gave the otherwise classic outfit a sharper, more contemporary feel. And then there was the saree. Sara wore a pastel green Katan silk Banarasi handloom number from Tilfi, featuring delicate floral motifs and the kind of detailed weave that doesn’t really need much else around it.The styling worked because of the contrast. The corset was structured and sleek, while the saree was soft and flowing. One piece felt very modern, the other rooted in Indian tradition.Sara didn’t go overboard with the accessories either. She wore a statement diamond necklace from Golubhai Badalia Diamond, complete with cascading details, along with a matching diamond cuff. The jewellery added just the right amount of drama. It also sat beautifully against the sweetheart neckline of the corset. Her beauty look was kept fairly simple. Sara went for softly defined eyes, shaped brows, glowing skin and a muted rosy lip. Her hair was pulled back into a neat updo, with a few loose strands framing her face. What makes the look interesting is that it doesn’t try too hard to blend the old with the new. The Banarasi saree remains the star, while the corset changes the mood completely. It’s the kind of styling that makes you look twice, especially if you’re used to seeing a saree paired with a more traditional blouse. We loved Sara’s latest look, how about you?
